Fans of Benedict Cumberbatch are NOT called “bitches”. Get over it.

A note to the Media in general – please stop calling us “bitches”.

Fans of Benedict Cumberbatch have been permanently labelled after one small group, who named themselves in jest.  The majority however, and Cumberbatch himself has been vocal on this subject, have come to realise that we’re above that name.

Therefore, the “collective” no longer refers to themselves as “bitches”. It’s the media that won’t let that one go.  Seriously.  Get over it.  It’s a catchy title that is primarily used as click-bait.  Nothing more.

Contrary to popular opinion, not all of Cumberbatch’s fans are screaming teenage girls (and quite frankly most teenage girls are above that too).  There is a full spectrum of sexes, creeds, ages and backgrounds.  We’re overall a pretty well educated and polite bunch of people.  All of the fans I’ve already met have been wonderful, and I’m due to meet a few more when I get to the Hamlet performance in October.  It’s something I’m very much looking forward to.  New friends, and classical theatre.

As for theatre performances and those people who have been taking pictures/video, I understand how you would want to record something for yourself to look back on and remember the event, however the whole point is that it is live and a once in a lifetime experience. By all means blog about your feelings after the fact, but use your memory. Don’t disturb the action by taking photos/video, when etiquette clearly states that this should not be done.  They have programmes designed to be keepsakes.

Besides, when taking photos/video you have to look at a small screen. If I wanted to watch a performance on a screen, I would stay at home and watch TV. I shall watch the theatre performance with my eyes. Not though a lens.
